Wall System Options

All cedar D-log laminated timber wall - joined with glue lam corner posts.
Laminated timbers are lightweight and easy to install.
No cranes or chinking are needed to erect the walls.

Our manufacturers offer outstanding laminated wall systems that meet or beat Pacific Northwest energy code requirements for R-21 walls.

Cedar Homes of Washington Inc. offers our homeowners a wide selection of exterior wall system options including:

5" x 8" flat milled all cedar or pine laminated timbers (double tongue & groove)
6" x 8" D log all cedar laminated timbers (double tongue & groove)
Post and Beam -- with many options for exterior siding and interior finishes

We use inland Western Red Cedar (a lighter more consistent color than other cedars) and Ponderosa Pine because of their unique insulating qualities. Enlarged under a microscope, these woods exhibit a cellular structure that contains millions of tiny airspaces - airspaces that insulate up to two times better than synthetic insulators, six times better than brick and fifteen times better than concrete! Heat is trapped in the thermal mass of these tiny cells and released to your best advantage. You stay warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer!

Interior walls can be solid partitions (thinner than our laminated exterior timbers) or stud framed. Some of our homeowners prefer stud framed interior walls because the sheetrock accentuates the beauty of the natural wood and "lightens up" their home. If low maintenance is your preference, solid interior wall partitions are fast to construct and require very little long term care.

Finishes:

To protect the natural beauty of the wood from the harmful effects of sun and moisture, we recommend an exterior finish that penetrates the wood and contains a pigment. Many of our homeowners recommend Sikkens Wood finishes. It has a rich glow that protects the wood - but allows the grain to show through.

Interior walls do need protection from handprints and oils. We've used 2-3 coats of satin finish Verathane in our own home. This application can be either sprayed on (prior to moving in) or brushed on. Other than wiping down our walls occasionally, we've never had to reapply a finish in 20 years.
